Sanno Matsuri

The textures, the costumes, the idols. Asian cultures are experts at paying tribute to the past, to religion, and to tradition. This festival, hosted by the crew of the Hie Shrine, had its main event, the grand parade, through the streets of Tokyo. Police were dispatched, roads were temporarily closed and traffic held at bay for this massive cast. Only held once every two years, it was an impressive event.

I couldn’t hold back my love for black and white photography when it came to this event. The historical nature of the parade, combined with the modern surroundings of Tokyo’s neighborhoods from Shimbashi all the way to Hie Shrine were a match made in heaven. I hope you enjoy these shots as much as I enjoyed chasing it to get them on that day.
