teamlab Planets Tokyo
Immersive art is a relatively new concept. Projections, fog, natural elements, the play of light and shadow in a space all flowing together. teamLab understands this better than perhaps any other traditional museum, and their installations offer a different experience, if you’re brave enough to venture through it.
Such a new type of art also brings with it challenges, and opportunities for the photographer. Paintings, and indoor sculptures feel “off-limits” in that one is simply recreating another person’s artwork onto a camera’s image. The art itself is not original. However, in a teamLab setting, that all changes. Devoid of visitors, the space would not feel alive. It is the connection between people, and the sensory environments that make it work, and this is fair game for photography. Unfortunately, their exhibits are often very dark, making a decent photograph a difficult endeavor. For these ones that had the assistance of sunlight shining through, the result felt worthy of sharing here. Enjoy, and if you have the chance on your travels, I encourage you to visit Tokyo’s, or another city’s teamLab for yourself.
