Arashiyama Bamboo Forest

Arashiyama is one of those gems, like many in Kyoto, that is forever stuck in time. Natural and historic, the bamboo trees stretch up for what seems like miles, obscuring the rest of society from your mind. While the grove is much smaller than the forest name might suggest, it is always worth the visit.

It has been widely publicized that Kyoto is practically overrun by tourists. Fall was the height of this popularity as crowds came for school breaks and to chase the changing seasons. Thus, I didn’t get the classic photo of the bare path stretching out in the middle of the bamboo grove - there were simply too many people to allow for that break.

Am I bothered or disappointed by this? Not in the least. As someone who used to call Kyoto home, it really warms my heart to see so many visitors enjoying these beautiful areas - so long as they do it respectfully.

The bamboo grove may be the main event, but that does not mean it is the only attraction in this area. 99% of the tourists completely overlooked the hiking path just East of the grove. It has a small entry fee, but for that you can sit down and enjoy a cup of matcha au lait. Normally I’m not a big fan of green tea, but this one was heavenly. Highly recommend extending your stay for this and the views it provides.
